Now a decade later the controversy continues, with the
Wireless Phone industry and some American public health
agencies saying there is no or very little health risk in
using cell phones. But many researches state that enough
evidence has been obtained through independent scientific
studies worldwide to warn consumers that there are definite
harmful effects from Electromagnetic Frequencies (EMF)
emitted from Wireless Phones and in all likelihood these
emissions can cause Brain Cancer.
A definitive answer is supposed to have come from the
Interphone International Study Group, which began in 2000
and ended in 2006.
However, continuing internal squabbling among the
researchers as to how to interpret the risks of EMF
emissions by cell phones has stalled the publication. It
appears that the divisions among the researchers have
focused on whether the faulty memories of the participant
skewed the study’s results. In the meantime, some individual
countries involved in the study are starting to release
results and some of the results show increased risk of brain
tumors for people who have used their cell phones for more
than 10 years on the same side of the head. Unfortunately,
because national samples are a smaller segment of the whole
study, the information has not been considered as
significant as the collective information of the study.
In the meantime, approximately 270 million people use cell
phones everyday in America alone. Worldwide it is estimated
there are roughly 4 billion cell phone users to date. Among
these figures are teenagers and children whose skulls are
thinner and whose brains are not fully developed until
around the age of 20. This age group is particularly
vulnerable in that they absorb as much as twice the
emissions than adults.
The Interphone International study group was funded by the
European Union and other national and local government
funding bodies as well as the GSM Association (Global System
for Mobile communications) and the Mobile Manufacturers
Forum, an international non-profit organization founded in
1998 by a number of leading manufacturers of mobile radio
equipment. The study group was comprised of a research team
of 50 scientists from 13 countries including Australia,
Canada, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Israel,
Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden and the United
Kingdom.
In a more recent study, the International EMF Collaborative
released their “Cell phones and Brain Tumors 15 Reasons for
Concern” study to counter the Interphone study claiming the
reasons the study has been held up for years for publication
is due to serious flaws in its overall design causing a
great underestimation of brain tumor risk. The flaws they
state included categorizing subjects who used portable
phones as not being exposed, which in reality these phones
emit the same EMF Radiation as cell phones. The study also
excluded many Brain Tumor types as well as people who had
died or were so ill from their Brain Tumor they couldn’t be
interviewed, and it also excluded children and teenagers,
who are most vulnerable to EMFs.
The EMF Collaborative study is not one of the first to show
cell phones increase users risk for Brain Cancer. In 2006, a
similar report was released by the Dutch Health Council in
Sweden and there have been other European and American
studies that have released comparable reports. Also, the EMF
Collaborative has received numerous endorsements from
American and European doctors, scientists and experts. Lloyd
Morgan, a retired Berkeley, CA electronic engineer and one
of the authors of the study, developed a Brain Tumor in 1995
and was told by doctor that the Tumor was more than likely
caused by his work around Electromagnetic Fields. Morgan
believes that cell phones, which emit EMF, have caused and
will cause brain tumors. He feels when looking at the
independent research, the results present a direct
correlation between brain cancer causation and cell phone
usage.
On the other hand, if you look at the research funded by
those involved in the cell phone industry, it is written in
such a way as to appear that there are no risks or evidence
of a Cell phone Brain Cancer link. According to Lloyd
Morgan, he has stated, "Exposure to cell phone radiation is
the largest human health experiment ever undertaken, without
informed consent, and has some 4 billion participants
enrolled. Science has shown increased risk of brain tumors
from use of cell phones… The public must be informed."
