A new
study by Pike Research concludes that consumer support for
clean energy initiatives including renewable energy,
alternative fuel vehicles, and
smart grid technologies declined between 2009 and 2011.
In its annual Energy +ACY- Environment Consumer Survey of
more than 1,000 United States adults conducted over the last
three months of 2011, the average percentage of consumers
with an +IBw-extremely+IB0- or +IBw-very+IB0- favorable view
of 13 clean energy concepts declined from 50 percent in 2009
to 43 percent in 2011.
The
survey results, part of Pike Research+IBk-s annual, are
summarized in a free white paper, which is available for
download on Pike Research+IBk-s website.
Among
the 13 clean energy concepts, Biofuels suffered the greatest
decline in favorability, tallying 39 percent at the end of
2011. Smart grid and clean coal fell 10 percentage points
each to 37 and 42 percent respectively. The most popular are
solar (77 percent), wind (71 percent), hybrid vehicles (61
percent), and electric cars (55 percent). Smart meters
showed a 38 percent approval percentage.
The
energy initiatives showing least favorability were carbon
offsets/credits, nuclear power, and cap and trade. Almost
half the participants said they were unfamiliar with LEED
Certification, the building certification program
administered by the United States Green Building Council,
making it the least known initiative.
According to Pike, besides the favorable and unfavorable
opinions, +IBw-the number of respondents unfamiliar with a
concept is also considered to compare the level of consumer
awareness within each topic. The study includes charts
summarizing the survey results, along with commentary on
notable trends and patterns for each area.+IB0-
The
results of the survey were collected using a structured
online questionnaire. Respondents were offered a chance to
win prizes in exchange for their participation.
